ICT and Technology Integration in Work Experience Programs Presented by: Kimberley Walsh, M.S., Ed. Norview High School Norfolk, VA All students should be able to have “ALL Hands on Tech”. Some of the most under serviced students in the world of technology are those with disabilities. Enter the “Job Squad” where all hands of our students are quite literally on TECH throughout their work experience program. Our students learn shredding, folding and stuffing envelopes (small and large quantities), affixing pre-printed labels on envelopes, sharpening pencils, collating up to six sheets of paper, stapling, laminating items, creating brochures and pamphlets, sewing, living skills and piece work all with the use of technology. Our students use work orders filled out by members of our school staff to obtain work and practice real life work, communication, and social skills. We know from research that the “quality of life and quality of support for people with intellectual disability have both been important research topics during in recent decades. Yet in the growing body of literature in this area, people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities have received only limited attention” (Maes, Lambrrechts, Hostyn & Petry, 2007). “Personal ability is considered to be the most powerful predictor of variation in quality of life outcomes, and individuals with lower adaptive skills achieve on average fewer personal outcomes than those with higher levels of social adaptation” (Emerson et al., 2000; Felce, Lowe, Beecham, & Hallam, 2000; Felce, Lowe, & Jones, 2002; Hatton, Emerson, Robertson, Henderson, & Cooper, 1996; Mansell, Beadle-Brown, Macdonald, & Ashman, 2003; Stancliffe & Lakin, 1998). ICTs stand for information and communication technologies. This presentation will explore the usefulness of these types of technology, as well as adaptive technology tools, in the development and implementation of a work experience program for students who are defined as MD / severe and profound. The target population for this presentation is teachers of students whom are 14-22 years of age and are transitioning to the adult supported work environments. This presentation will focus on the building of a work experience programs using technology for students who are MD, AUT, OHI, VI, ect. Areas covered in this presentation will include work experience objective, materials, data collection, instructional correlation to IEP goals, instructional correlation to independent living skills, instructional correlation to post-secondary employment and education, hierarchy of prompting, task analysis, and functional independence scales. The presentation’s goal is to give our audience all the information they need to ensure that they too can have “ALL Hands on TECH”.
